Can you get flawless makeup without putting on tonnes of foundation? Can you achieve a glowy complexion without relying on highlighter and blusher? Flawless and beautiful makeup is not a dream if you know how to take care of your skin. Here are some useful tips to achieve the flawless and long-lasting festive makeup of your dreams:
Contrary to popular belief, there’s not one cleanser that fits all types of skin. If you have sensitive skin, choose a cleanser that is gentle enough to not irritate your skin; if you have oily skin, always go for a hydrating cleanser that can help to lock in moisture and unclog your pores.
Remember not to over-cleanse your skin too. Over-cleansing will eliminate natural oil in your skin and damage the lipid barrier. It will also strip away vital moisture and upset the optimum balance of water-oil ratio in your skin.
As such, cleansing your face twice a day is good enough, but more importantly, remember to never go to bed without removing your makeup.
2) Get rid of dead skin cells and unwanted impurities
Dead skin cells, dirt, and pollutants will clog up your pores and dull your complexion. No complexion can look good when it is dry, cracked, flaky, and filled with unwanted skin tags, acne, and more. With all these issues, any makeup application, no matter how well done, will become cakey.
To prevent them, exfoliate weekly, if possible. Tone your skin with a cotton pad every time after cleansing and before moisturising. Doing so helps remove unwanted oil, refines enlarged pores, tightens the gaps between skin cells, and rebalances skin’s pH level as well as its water-oil ratio. The result is skin that’s well-prepped to receive the full benefits of your moisturiser.
This step also makes a huge difference in achieving a flawless makeup application, as sufficiently moisturised skin ensures your makeup can be more seamlessly blended in.
3) Remember to take care of your eye area
If your eyes are tired, dull, puffy, and framed by dark eye circles, you’ll usually turn to concealer. However, it won’t look good either if said concealer sets into the creases around your eye area. That is why eye cream is so important. It reduces the aforementioned issues by moisturising and evening out the skin tone around your eyes. Once applied, your eyes will also look more perked up and awake.
It’s also important to remember that the skin around your eyes is the most fragile and thin. Using eye cream reduces the amount of makeup needed around your eyes, and makes any future signs of ageing more manageable.
4) Never skip serum and moisturiser
Serums can penetrate deeper layers of your skin and target specific skin problems, while moisturisers lock in vital moisture needed for plumper skin. Similar to cleansers, tailoring the right moisturiser to your skin type is essential. If you have acne-prone or oily skin, always look for an oil-free moisturiser; if you have dry skin, choose something that is formulated to provide an instant yet long-lasting boost of moisture.
It is also advisable to apply a light layer of moisturiser before you begin your makeup routine. In fact, your moisturiser can double up as your primer if you do not have one on hand, as it provides a layer of protection that keeps your makeup from setting into any creases on your skin. It’ll also smoothen your skin texture, allowing your makeup to glide on more easily for a flawless effect.
5) Make BB cream and sunscreen a part of your routine
If you have taken good care of your skin all this time, you may need just a light layer of BB cream to achieve a flawless finish.
A BB cream offers a mix of moisturiser, foundation, and sunscreen. It corrects uneven skin tones while providing protection from UV rays. It makes a great alternative for days where you only need or want a simple, light layer of makeup.
Unlike foundation, a BB cream usually has sheer coverage, so make sure the shade matches your skin tone so you get a more natural finish. Pro tip: Try and apply a small amount around your jawline to see if the shade blends in well with your skin tone.
6) Soothe your skin with the luxurious touch of a facial mask
On days where you need to wear makeup for longer, wouldn’t it be great if you don’t have to reapply your makeup and can avoid it from looking cakey as the day progresses? The trick is to keep your skin soothed beforehand with a creamy facial mask.
Put on your favourite music, relax your mind, and let your skin enjoy a mini spa with your mask of choice. It works even better than simply applying a primer prior to foundation, as the mask’s moisturising properties can last longer to keep your skin smooth for a whole day of flawless makeup.
